Structural Concrete Surveying Services

A concrete structural repair survey is a systematic process used to assess the condition of reinforced concrete structures, identify defects, determine the causes of deterioration, and develop an appropriate
repair strategy.

The survey typically begins with a visual inspection to locate surface defects such as cracks, spalling, delamination, or corrosion staining. This is followed by non-destructive testing (NDT) methods—such as hammer tapping, cover meter surveys, half-cell
potential, or ultrasonic pulse velocity testing—to evaluate internal conditions without damaging the structure. In some cases, destructive tests like core sampling and laboratory analysis are carried out to determine compressive strength, carbonation depth, and chloride content.

The data gathered are then analysed to establish the extent of deterioration, the root causes (e.g., corrosion of reinforcement, freeze–thaw cycles, chemical attack), and to inform the design of a suitable repair methodology.

The process and assessment criteria are guided by relevant British Standards (BS) and European Norms (EN), primarily:

  • BS EN 1504 series – Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures, which provides a comprehensive framework for inspection, testing, repair design, and execution.
  • BS EN 206 and BS 8500 – which specify concrete composition and durability requirements.
  • BS 1881 and BS EN 12504 – for testing hardened concrete.
  • BS 8110 or BS EN 1992 (Eurocode 2) – for structural design considerations where strengthening or partial reconstruction is required.

Upon completion of all surveying and analysis of sample data a repair strategy can be formulated and a written report generated detailing all defects.

The Repair Process

The repair process typically begins with a thorough assessment of the damage, which may include visual inspections, non-destructive testing, and concrete core sampling. Once the extent and cause of the damage are understood, appropriate repair methods can be selected. These methods may include:

  • Concrete Resurfacing: Applying a new layer of concrete or a specialised repair mortar to restore the surface and improve appearance and durability.
  • Crack Injection: Filling cracks with epoxy or polyurethane resins to bond and seal them, preventing further water ingress and deterioration.
  • Patch Repairs: Removing damaged sections of concrete and replacing them with new material, ensuring proper bonding and structural integrity.
  • Cathodic Protection: Implementing systems to protect steel reinforcement from corrosion, especially in environments exposed to moisture and chlorides.
  • Fibre Reinforcement: Adding fibre materials to repair mortars to enhance tensile strength and flexibility, improving the overall performance of the repair.

Rebar Protection work using Passive Cathodic Protection and Impressed Current systems

Using specifically designed equipment from Electro-Tech CP systems, QST can offer a new build or refurbishment system designed and installed to suit the needs of the project.
